The Pirate Bay has sold to Swedish gaming company Global Gaming Factory X AB for around $7.8M. TBP assures that nothing will change. Global Gaming has issued a statement saying they will be changing things around so that copyright owners will be fairly compensated.

Some say that’s too little for a site that is among the top 100 visited internet sites globally, and others say it’s plenty for a site recently embroiled in as much controversy as it has been.

For the owners of TBP, they can only say it’s enough.

Everyone wave goodbye to what The Pirate Bay once was. Whatever it turns into – usable or not – it will never be the same.

Yael Naim. Yael Naim album

Yael Naim is the second studio album by Yael Naim. It contains the hit single “New Soul”.
In Naim’s birth country of France her self-titled album was released on October 22, 2007. On iTunes the album was available as a digital download world-wide but did not gain much popularity until February 2008 when Apple ads with her song New Soul started to broadcast.

In the United States and Canada the album was released in stores on March 18, 2008. Mostly because of the popularity of the song New Soul it debuted at #15 in Canada and #55 in the United States.

Yael Naim’s voice has an airy, innocent quality to it, whether she’s singing in English, French, or soft, rapid Hebrew. Some of the tracks, like “Paris,” consist of simply Naim, a strummed guitar, and a soothing cadence, though there is, of course, also “New Soul,” which is more upbeat and utilizes some fun instrumentation.

Despite her history, Naim has never toured the States. “I’m excited to play over in America,” she says. “When I was making the record, I never expected anything like this would happen.”

The Lodger was formed inside the mind of Ben Siddall inside the squalor of an LS6 bedsit.

After 3 sold-out limited 7s (“Many Thanks For Your Honest Opinion” Dance to the Radio, “Watching” Double Dragon, “Let Her Go” Angular Records) and touring around the UK and Europe with bands such as The Long Blondes and The Research, the group released their debut album “Grown-Ups”, produced by Alan Smyth and James Ford, in June 2007 on Angular Records in the UK, Slumberland Records in the US, Fabtone in Japan and Speak N Spell in Australia.

Critical acclaim for the album followed, particularly on the blogs; the band have featured heavily on the elbo.ws charts since the release along with heavy rotation on US college radio and other stations worldwide.

The 2nd album is titled “Life Is Sweet” and was released on May 2008.

There’s a good chance that The Lodger will end up being one of those groups you’ll either love or hate but who will divide the room completely, one way or the other.
There’s a little bit of The Smiths about them, a little bit of Suede and just a dash of The Libertines, a patchwork quilt you can snuggle down into as you lie in an urban bedsit contemplating lost girlfriends, meaningless futures and why the universe and your music collection revolves around diminished sevenths.

Their lyrics sit tantalisingly between fatalism, broken dreams and hopeless optimism. “You’re a cruel, cruel girl/but sublime”, sings Ben Siddall on Falling Down; “It’s a funny affair/Trying to address the people/you don’t care about anymore”, goes one of the most memorable lines on The Conversation, while on Nothing Left To Say he warns us that, “There’s an innocence you see/of not knowing much about tomorrow/and the places that we’ll be/sounds so hollow”.

Tracks:

1. My Finest Hour
2. The Good Old Days
3. Falling Down
4. Honey
5. The Conversation
6. A Hero’s Welcome
7. A Year Since Last Summer
8. An Unwelcome Guest
9. Running Low
10. Nothing Left (To Say)
11. Famous Last Words

Mudhoney. The Lucky Ones

The Lucky Ones is the ninth album by the band Mudhoney. It was released on May 20, 2008.

Mudhoney have never really received the respect they deserve over the years. To the uninformed, Nirvana were the grunge band that started it all, but trace the lineage back, and right at the start of that poorly monikered genre were Mudhoney.

Drummer Dan Peters filled in for Nirvana inbetween Chad Channing and Dave Grohl and original ‘Honey bass player Matt Lukin was a founding member of super sludge outfit Melvins. All in all Mudhoney’s constituent parts have been at the foundations of one the biggest musical movements of the ’90s. As a whole, it would be easy to argue that Mudhoney have been cruelly overlooked in favour of the likes of Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam.

Recorded in 3 and a half days, this is vibrant rock at its best. It shows that while Mudhoney can create one hell of a cathartic noise, there was always a perfectly formed tune at its heart.

The whole album is a bundle of fuzzed up joy always sounding like Mudhoney at their prime. The sound isn’t new, but then it never really was. Perhaps the most vital point is that this is an album that sounds like a band playing. It hasn’t been lovingly ironed out and stripped of its charms. You can practically hear the strings being hit, the feedback is right there, and Arm’s voice is about as good as it has ever been.

The Lucky Ones is unlikely to garner any new fans for Mudhoney, which is a shame because this is one of the best albums of their career. For those who like their rock raw and full of attitude; this is how garage rock should be done, and there isn’t a band around who do it like Mudhoney.

Tracks:

I’m Now (2:40)
Inside Out Over You (3:25)
The Lucky Ones (4:52)
Next Time (3:01)
And the Shimmering Lights (3:05)
The Open Minds (2:26)
What’s This Thing (2:54)
Running Out (3:28)
Tales of Terror (3:17)
We Are Rising (4:30)
New Meaning (2:39)

Islands. Arm’s Way

Arm’s Way is the second studio album by Montreal-based Indie band, Islands. It is scheduled for release on May 20, 2008 on CD and download. The album’s title is a play on the words “harm’s way”. The album leaked online on April 11, 2008.

Arm’s Way finds Islands setting sail distinctly away from the indie-yelping that characterized their debut, Return to the Sea. The Montreal band spends most of their sophomore effort shifting gears between various styles, opening up with a string of songs featuring spaghetti western guitars and ominous lyrics.

In the middle of the album, though, Islands turn to blissful ‘80s pop for inspiration, and in channeling The Cure and The Cars, they really hit their stride. “Kids Don’t Know Shit” and “Life in Jail” are two of the album’s best, and the latter features a classic Nick T. lyrical non-sequitur: “If you want to be a shark / you better learn to stay awake.” Though Arm’s Way is a resounding success when it’s joyful, the album hits a high note with a darker song. “I Feel Evil Creeping In” is a slow, haunting expression of diary-only darkness, including the confession, “My blood is dirty / and I like it.”

Islands sound like a band who are willing to try everything to find their sound, and they fit a lot of experimentation into Arm’s Way. The album starts slowly, but there are some true gems packed towards the album’s conclusion that prove to be well worth the patience.

Tracks:
1. The Arm
2. Pieces Of You
3. J’aime Vous Voir Quitter
4. Abominable Snow
5. Creeper
6. Kids Don’t Know Shit
7. Life In Jail
8. In The Rushes
9. We Swim
10. To A Bond
11. I Feel Evil Creeping In
12. Vertigo (If It’s A Crime)

Lupe Fiasco. The Cool

Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool was received with mostly positive reviews from music critics, with an 77 rating from review aggregator MetaCritic.com. Entertainment Weekly said “Sonically, he’s got the same kind of gratifying ADHD going on. Some tracks, like ‘Paris, Tokyo,’ contrast his Twista-style rapid-fire delivery with a lazy rhythm that’s close to smooth jazz which can comparable to A Tribe Called Quest. ‘Hello/Goodbye,’ at the other extreme, has U.K. electro outfit Unkle providing a tense rock feel.” The NY Times, hailing the album as “one of the year’s best hip-hop albums,” added that “The songs only grow more urgent as Lupe Fiasco expands his sociopolitical perspective. ‘Intruder Alert’ starts as a wary love song and broadens its topic to immigration. All Music Guide said “He is one of the most clever artists around, and as far as telling stories with rhymes goes, he’s way up there, best exemplified by ‘Hip-Hop Saved My Life’ (a gripping story about a struggling rapper) and ‘Gotta Eat’ (where Lupe’s inspiration for metaphors is a cheeseburger, yet it is no more corny than Main Source’s classic ‘Just a Friendly Game of Baseball’).”
